Naturalistic approaches to musical semiotics and the study of causal musical signification

چکیده

The naturalist approach, which aims at applying methods from the natural sciences to the study of music, provides a straightforward paradigm for dealing with causal musical signification processes. What is aimed at in this paper is (i) a tentative reconstruction of the tradition underlaying causal musical signification in its relationship to semiotics, (ii) the presentation and discussion of a framework by which aspects of causal musical signification can be studied and dealt with. ∗Published in: I. Zannos (Ed.) (1999). Music and Signs – Semiotic and Cognitive Studies in Music, Bratislava: ASCO Art and Science, pp.11-38. (Also available at: http://www.ipem.rug.ac.be/staff/marc/marc.html)
